Hibiscus

By: Jack Adam Weber

High-rises lift the sky,

Endless miles

Of asphalt’s

Metal assault,

Exhaust, cell phones

And stereo’s numbing pulse

Singe

Our pulp and flesh—

Where, where is room

For tender hearts?

See there,

Medicine grows

On street corners

No one even knows.

Hibiscus: a common red flower used ornamentally and medicinally to reduce fever and clear the lungs.

In Chinese medicine the Lungs correspond with the Metal Element, and the crimson red color of the flower with the Heart and Fire Element.
