A new study shows that vitamin D binds directly to your DNA.
The newest Journal of Immunology shows that Vitamin D activates a gene that stops inflammation. Exposure to the sun is the main source for your body’s vitamin D but sun screens, aging and clothes interfere with this source of vitamin D.
In the ten leading causes of death in the U.S., chronic inflammation contributes to at least seven of them. These include heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and nephritis.
Vitamin D is very important in helping your immune system and modulating the inflammatory pathways.
Various studies have shown the following correlations.
- People with low vitamin D have significantly more cases of colon cancer.
- More than half of people with osteoporosis-related fractures had low vitamin D.
- 63% of people with Crohn’s disease had low vitamin D levels. The study showed 40% of them were taking a supplement that contained D! Evidently it was not enough or of an adequate nutrient source to allow absorption.
- Over 90% of people who had heart attacks were vitamin D deficient.
Many people state to have depression, but only in the winter. This is referred to as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), or Seasonal Depression. The main reason is not enough sun, which causes further Vitamin D deficiency and therefore depression. It is interesting that 10 to 15 minutes in the direct sunlight at mid-day will produce as much as 10,000 units of vitamin D in a healthy individual.
Many are taking vitamin D from the drug store or health food store and think they are getting adequate levels. Most often, unless they are taking a high grade of vitamin D, it does not get into the body where you need it. Please contact your practitioner today to find out if you are getting enough Vitamin D intake.
