MK-02 Introduction to Asian Brush Painting with Martha Klare
In this one day workshop you will be introduced to the use of the four basic materials which symbolize the “Treasures” of Asian Brush Painting: brush, ink stone, black ink (aka sumi), and paper. These materials appear simple, yet offer much versatility and complexity in their interactions between themselves, water and the artist. You will learn basics such as: how to hold the brush to maximize control and communication with it, some of the foundational strokes used in calligraphy and painting and a few brush techniques to create different effects. Using your new skills you will have the opportunity to create a piece and will be able to take your creation home. Cultural roots and history of the art will be shared informally throughout the workshop.

“I begin most painting sessions by grinding an ink stick and water against an inkstone to create my own ink. This is an important ancient ritual that enables the artist to get in touch with the energy within. From there, the magic of the brush, the ink I have created, the paper, water, and my energy, interact to take me on a painting journey.”
