Mandalas are pieces of art that evoke healing and spiritual development. A mandala is a pattern created by interlocking spheres that reflect and represent the geometry of the entire universe. Their symbolism is larger than life and represent the ecosystem of the universe. Mandalas are beautiful, colorful patterns that have a meditative effect. The circle symbolizes wholeness, continuity, connection, and the cycle of life. Circles have no hard edges or angles, making them softer and more harmonious. No matter where you are, if you look hard enough you may be able to pick out a mandala. They are all around us; they are even naturally occurring in nature. The earth, the moon, the sun, and flowers are all mandalas.

The word mandala comes from the ancient Sanskrit language and translates loosely to “sacred circle”. The earliest of mandalas can be traced back to early Hinduism. They continue to form an integral part of the design in many Hindu temples. They can be seen in certain parts of the architecture for Buddhist, Islamic, and Christian religious centers as well.

They are also used across various cultures and religions to express particular beliefs and opinions. Tibetan Buddhist Monks and some Native Americans use mandalas as a way of arousing spiritual energy, meditation, and healing. Sometimes mandalas are associated with a symbolic palace and other times they can be used to visually represent a deity or a group of deities.

Mandalas are known to promote healing and positivity. They are widely recognized for their spiritual meaning and representation of wholeness. They are also known to represent their creator. In order to heal, we must bring imbalances in the mind and spirit back into a state of equilibrium. This process of balancing our mind and spirit will have a positive effect on our bodies, and mandalas can help.

Due to the healing power of mandalas, there are many people who use them in art therapy. People who use mandalas in art therapy can either draw their own or color in a black and white template. Coloring is fun, relaxing, therapeutic, and a good creative outlet, no matter what age you are. When coloring a mandala, there is no right or wrong way. You do not have to stay in the lines, you can use whatever color or colors you want, and each mandala will be uniquely your own creation. You can express who you are and where you are on life’s journey. It is not about the final product; the journey is more important than your destination.

Circles are believed to help individuals focus inward. Mandalas consist of many circles; so naturally, mandalas can aid in meditation. Meditation through mandalas can guide us through this healing process or help us begin a journey of self-realization. Mandala meditation allows you to heal at a pace that is right for you. Ideally, by setting aside ten minutes to meditate every day, you will begin to destress and find balance in your life.

Healing is a different process for every person. Some people find it easier and can begin the healing process almost immediately. Others may have more trouble and require a longer time to find their balance. The meditative and therapeutic properties of mandalas can help a person begin their journey of healing.
