You Matter Marathon

Making a positive difference in the world can seem nearly impossible today. Yet a simple act of kindness can go a long way in inviting hope for humanity. That’s the premise behind the You Matter Marathon (No Running Required.), a movement that’s creating and enriching positive connections between people and communities. According to its founder Cheryl Rice, many troubling trends like the spike in suicidesbullyinggun deaths, and political divisiveness, stem from one major crisis—a crisis of “mattering.” The You Matter Marathon is taking on this crisis with a small item, a card with the words “You Matter.” printed on it. The simple gesture of giving it to others is creating bridges of compassion and care between people worldwide.

“We’re living in a world where people crave connection yet feel more isolated than ever. Every one of us is here for a reason. The You Matter Marathon reminds us of that,” said Rice, a leadership coach trained in positive psychology.

I think Holistic Healing News’s audience would benefit from learning more about this event–just in time for the holiday season when we are often thinking of expressing more gratitude. More details about the event and Cheryl as an interview are below.

What is YMM?

The purpose of the You Matter Marathon is to create and enrich positive connections between people and within communities by inviting people to share You Matter cards during November (although it can be done anytime during the year). People are encouraged to hand cards to family members, friends, people in their community, or even perfect strangers. Being kind is good for the soul. The impact of this one small gesture can be transformative. Past participants and recipients shared they had an increasing sense of gratitude, compassion, connection and overall happiness.

How does it work?

Sign up at You Matter Marathon and the organization will mail you 30 You Matter cards for free. People can also participate as an ambassador for groups such as a school, a company, or a religious organization. Cards with the words “You Matter” are mailed in mid-October.

Who has been involved?

Rice has conducted exit surveys. Respondents reported organizing campaigns in schools, hospitals, workplaces, and sharing cards with loved ones and strangers. Many shared tearful connections remarking how the experience made both the giver and receiver feel good. Corporate sponsors for 2018 include School Improvement Partnership, Global Coaching Alliance, and Brown’s Super Stores.

Where has it been done?

Since its launch in 2016, approximately 75,000 people from all 50 states and 65 countries have shared over half-a-million You Matter cards. For a list of countries, visit here. Rice and her board of advisors have a goal of 25 million cards being given by 2025. Cheryl is a compelling interview. She’s spoken about the You Matter Marathon global kindness initiative with several publications including Good Morning Washington. She would love to share the value of the message with you and your audience.

She’s available to discuss topics such as:

  • Why YMM is needed today more than ever.
  • Why the You Matter cards are much more than a “nice” gesture.
  • How social media is actually making us feel isolated and alone.
  • The powerful moment in a grocery store parking lot that gave her the idea for the marathon.
  • The psychological benefits and empowerment people experience when participating.
